Thanksgiving & Party Food Calculator: How Much Food per Person

Work out how much turkey, sides, pies, or party food to buy for your guest count, with leftovers, an optional cost estimate, and USDA turkey thaw times.

These are planning rules of thumb, not guarantees. Appetites, the number of dishes, and the time of day change what people actually eat. Refrigerate cooked food within 2 hours and eat leftovers within 3–4 days.

Turkey (whole, bone-in)

12 lb

Planned for 9 adult-equivalent portions, rounded up

Shopping list

  • Potatoes, raw (for mashed or roasted)5 lb
  • Stuffing, cooked7.5 cups
  • Green beans or other vegetable side3.5 lb
  • Gravy3.5 cups
  • Cranberry sauce1.5 cups
  • Dinner rolls15
  • Pies (about 8 slices each)2

Adult-equivalent portions: 9 (8 adults + 2 children counted as half)

Turkey thaw time (USDA)

Refrigerator: about 3 days

Cold water: about 6 hours (30 minutes per lb, change the water every 30 minutes). Allow about 24 hours per 4–5 lb in the refrigerator. Cook a turkey thawed in cold water right away. Cook to 165°F in the thickest part of the breast, the innermost thigh and wing, and any stuffing.

Quick answer: Plan about 1 pound of bone-in turkey per adult guest (1.5 pounds if you want leftovers) and count each child as half a portion. Example: 8 adults and 2 children is 9 adult portions, so plan a 9 to 14 lb turkey. Thaw it in the refrigerator for about 24 hours per 4 to 5 pounds.

Practical guide

How to plan how much food to make for a crowd

  1. 1

Count portions, not people. Treat each adult as one portion and each child as about half a portion, then add them up. Ten adults and four children make twelve adult portions.

  2. 2

Pick the event type. A sit-down Thanksgiving dinner, a cookout, a buffet, and an appetizer-only party use different amounts per guest, because people eat less of each dish when there are more dishes.

  3. 3

Decide how many leftovers you want. For turkey, plan about 1 pound of bone-in bird per adult portion, and closer to 1.5 pounds if you want leftovers for sandwiches. The calculator raises sides by a smaller margin because they are easier to top up.

  4. 4

Turn the main item into a shopping size. Round the turkey up to a whole pound, then check the thaw time before you buy: about 24 hours in the refrigerator for every 4 to 5 pounds.

  5. 5

Add a price per pound or a total budget to see a cost estimate and an amount per guest, then compare it with the store ad before you shop.

Worked example

Example: 8 adults and 2 children make 9 adult portions. With a few leftovers, the calculator plans a 12 lb turkey, about 5 lb of potatoes, 2 pies, and 15 dinner rolls. A 12 lb turkey needs about 3 days in the refrigerator to thaw, and at $2.50 per pound it costs about $30.

How to read the result

Treat the amounts as a starting point for your shopping list. When you land between sizes, round up on the main item and down on the sides, because extra sides are easier to stretch than a turkey that is too small.

Important limits: These are planning rules of thumb, not guarantees or official portion standards. Appetites, the number of dishes, the time of day, bone weight, and dietary needs all change real consumption. Thaw times and the 165°F safe internal temperature follow USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service guidance; always confirm doneness with a food thermometer. Refrigerate cooked food within 2 hours and eat leftovers within 3 to 4 days.

Evergreen method

Calculate cost per eaten serving

Recipe value depends on the servings actually eaten and the ingredients actually used.

Formula

cost per eaten serving = ingredient cost used ÷ servings eaten

Reproducible steps

  1. 1.Cost only the fraction of each package used.
  2. 2.Count realistic eaten servings, not theoretical yield.
  3. 3.Track leftovers separately so waste is visible.

Data note — Evergreen model: The formula works with your own inputs and does not depend on a specific price or year.

FAQ

Questions, answered

How much turkey do I need per person?

A common rule is about 1 pound of whole, bone-in turkey per adult, and about 1.5 pounds per person if you want leftovers. Count each child as half a portion. A boneless turkey breast needs less, roughly half a pound per person.

How long does it take to thaw a turkey?

The USDA says to allow about 24 hours per 4 to 5 pounds in the refrigerator, so a 12 lb turkey needs about 3 days. In cold water, allow about 30 minutes per pound, change the water every 30 minutes, and cook the turkey right away.

What internal temperature should a turkey reach?

The USDA recommends 165°F, measured with a food thermometer in the innermost part of the thigh and wing and the thickest part of the breast. Stuffing should also reach 165°F.

How much food do I need for a party?

Count adult portions, then plan by event type: roughly half a pound of raw meat per guest for a cookout, about 12 pieces per guest for an appetizer-only party, and about 1.5 cups of cooked sides per guest for a buffet. The calculator does the math from your guest count.

How many pies do I need for Thanksgiving?

Plan about one slice per portion and about 8 slices per pie. The calculator rounds up, so 9 portions need 2 pies. Add more if you serve several flavors and want everyone to try each.

How can I keep a big holiday meal affordable?

Compare turkey by unit price instead of package price, buy the amount you will actually use, and plan the leftovers on purpose. The Unit Price Calculator and Leftover Portion Calculator on this site help with both.
